Abstract:
My project involves building a computerized introductory physics tutorial for use in the University of Minnesota's Department of Physics. Physics educational research documents a need for improving students' conceptual understanding of physics concepts. Even after completing traditional lecture-based introductory physics courses, many students do not understand the ideas behind the subject matter that they have supposedly learned. Additional research shows that following a five-step problem-solving algorithm improves student performance and understanding. The computerized introductory physics tutorial or PAL, Personal Assistant for Learning, that I am working on uses this five-step approach to assist students while also having the added benefit of using one-on-one instruction.
