Jenifer Northwick

Jenifer Northwick is an M.A. student in the Rhetoric Department. She received the 2004 Medtronic Fellowship.

"This project takes as its premise the idea that receiving an implant is a life-changing experience and that implant recipients will view their bodies differently after receiving an implant. Taking as a starting point Donna Haraway's and Robbie Davis-Floyd's work on the body as cyborg, I will analyze a set of “transplant stories” that are posted on the Internet. I will look both at stories that are posted on the Websites of medical device companies and at personal Websites that are posted by individual implant recipients. I will limit my analysis to implants that are not done for cosmetic reasons. Analyzing these Websites will give me a better understanding of how implant recipients view the implant process and their bodies both before and after receiving an implant. Hopefully, this analysis will extend the discussion of the body as cyborg and extend the understanding of patients' attitudes toward implants and how implants affect their lives."
